How to Love Your Work

These days, a job needs to offer us more than financial security: we want them to provide us with status and meaning. But in order to think so freely, we would have to be emotionally balanced in a way that few of us are. In reality, when it comes to choosing an occupation, we tend to be haunted by three additional priorities. We need…” MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Watch more films on WORK and CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ X: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Dal Park https://dalpark.net/ Title animation produced in collaboration with Vale Productions https://www.valeproductions.co.uk/

What Does SCIENCE Say About Repetitions in Music Practice?

🚨 FREE PRACTICE GUIDE PDF 🚨 https://diegoalonsomusic.ck.page/practiceguide 🎸 TAKE LESSONS WITH ME 🎸 https://diegoalonsomusic.com/spanish-guitar-mastery/ Demonstration Video: https://youtu.be/djc4xC_1Xf0?si=wJhkHA_EZOfZkqG2 In this video, I break down several science-based strategies that help us figure out the optimal amount of repetitions we need to do in practice for the fastest results. The main strategies that I cover are the 70% Success Rate strategy (70/30 rule), the 85% Success rate strategy (a.k.a., the 85/15 rule), the "Overlearning" strategy, and Interleaved practice. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please remember that the strategies presented in this video are derived from very little research. They are wonderful suggestions and they have all worked well for me and for many of my students, but that doesn't mean they are the only solution. I recommend using these a starting points and then adjusting as needed. Some people may need to and they're repetitions closer to 85% rather than 70%. Again, the important Takeaway is to use these as suggestions and adjust as needed. Also, make sure to observe the suggestions for repetitions in every set that you do rather than just for one set. ⬇️ HELPFUL LINKS BELOW ⬇️ DEMONSTRATION VIDEO ON REPETITIONS https://youtu.be/djc4xC_1Xf0 REFERENCES BELOW 70% Success: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.07.19.549705v1.full.pdf 85% Success: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6831579/ Noa Kageyama (Bulletproof Musician): Low Incorrect Reps https://bulletproofmusician.com/8-things-top-practicers-do-differently/ Interleaved practice & Minimal Repetition https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/jn.00741.2019 Overlearning https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5323354/ TIME STAMPS 1:05 FIVE Things (not 6 things) to keep in mind BEFORE practicing 3:55 70% Success Rate (e.g., 30% Error Rate) 4:11 85% Success Rate (e.g., 85/15 Rule) 8:50 Interleaved Practice 10:11 Overlearning 12:44 Recap

Should I Choose Passion or Duty?

When it comes to deciding what to do with our lives, we are frequently presented with what looks like a very painful choice: the passionate path vs the safe path, but which is best for us in the long term? The latter involves the slow mastery of a dependable profession; we will be bored — but we know we’ll never be fired. Meanwhile, the former is a high-wire act in which we fantasise generating an income from what we deeply love and yet we constantly fear penury and humiliation...” MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Watch more films on WORK and CAPITALISM in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ X: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Elaine Song https://vimeo.com/user46647401 Title animation produced in collaboration with Vale Productions https://www.valeproductions.co.uk/

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Every Evening

It is estimated that some 70,000 separate thoughts hurry through consciousness from the moment we wake up to the time we slip into sleep. To help us understand those thoughts we've produced five questions to direct our minds to areas which we tend to neglect, and from where trouble can most intensely arise when we do so. It is estimated that, under a deceptively calm exterior, some 70,000 separate thoughts hurry through consciousness from the moment we wake up to the time we slip into sleep – some of these elaborate and sequential, many more fragmentary and sensory by nature. What these many thoughts have in common is that we seldom do them any kind of justice. The river of ideas and feelings is relentless, turbulent and chaotic. In a typical minute, we might briefly register that we are annoyed with a friend, then our minds are directed to a worry about a tax return, which is then quickly supplanted by the sighting of a raven, which makes us think of our grandmother, who evokes a trip we once took to Greece, which ushers in thoughts of some lip balm we need to purchase, which is then supplanted by a registering of a pain in our left knee, which is succeeded by a memory of a friend we lost touch with after university, which cedes to a recurring reflection on what kind of lamp we might invest in for the living room. And we might here still only be at the thirty second mark of what we casually call ‘thinking’ or just ‘gazing out of the window’…” MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-school-of-life-for-business/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Gemma green Hope https://www.gemmagreenhope.com/ Title animation produced in collaboration with Graeme Probert www.gpmotion.co.uk
